WhatsApp introduced end-to-end encryption back in 2016. This protected conversations and messages sent in its app.
In other words, apart from the sender and receiver of the messages, no one else can read the content of the conversation. In fact, not even Meta itself can snoop around or read the contents of anyone’s conversation.
As WhatsApp is omnipresent, a large percentage of people access it every day. This is why securely moving all encrypted chats and photos to another device is a challenge in itself. Moreover, transferring these chats from an Android to an iPhone, and vice-versa was typically only doable through third-party apps.
However, these third-party apps are usually shady and don’t always protect your data in comparison to the protection offered by WhatsApp. That said, in recent months, WhatsApp has finally made it possible to transfer data between Android and iPhones and iPhones to Android through its ecosystem.
WhatsApp has started rolling out processes that move data between these two operating systems in a more secure manner and always works alongside phone manufacturers to enable this transfer.
Let’s take a look at how you can transfer your WhatsApp chats to another device. Be sure to be connected to a high-speed internet such as Rise Broadband Internet during the transfer.
How to Move WhatsApp Data from Android to iPhone?
There are a few steps to follow when you want to move your WhatsApp chat or account from an Android device to an iPhone. This transfer should allow you to move your individual chats, group chats, profile photos, history, settings, photos, and videos from our current device to the next.
Initially, your call history also could not be moved, but now it can be, but it only shows your most recent call. However, your display name can’t be moved. Most of the work involved in transferring your WhatsApp data is done before the shift.
Now before you begin the process, your WhatsApp should be updated. Moreover, your Android device should be updated to Android 5, and the iPhone that you’re transferring your WhatsApp data to, should be on iOS 15.5.
Once you’ve put both the devices on the same network, you will start by opening the “Move to iOS” app which has to be downloaded on your Android device and start following the steps to connect both the phones. Now, choose WhatsApp as the data source to transfer from. From there, the app will ready all your chats to transfer across, and it’ll confirm with you to make the switch.
However, you’ll be logged out of WhatsApp on your Android phone. That is why you’ll need to download WhatsApp on your iPhone. The iPhone will ask if you use the same number as used previously and prompt you to complete this transfer.
How to Move WhatsApp Data from iPhone to Android?
Similar to transferring your WhatsApp data from an Android to an iPhone device, this can be done vice versa as well. That said, this isn’t doable until October 2021. Now you can easily transfer all your messages, photos, group conversations, and voice messages from an iPhone to an Android device.
This compatibility was initially only available on Samsung phones but hasn’t expanded on all devices running on Android 12, and the Google Pixel too. In order to do this transfer, you need to have a USB-C-to-Lightning cable that connects both devices.
When setting up your new Android device, you can either scan a QR code on the iPhone to launch the WhatsApp app, or you can simply go to Settings then Chats, and choose Move Chats to Android and then follow the steps to transfer all data.
According to the WhatsApp guide when it comes to moving data from an iPhone to a Samsung device, you’ll need to use the Samsung Smart Switch app. This has to be installed on your current and new phones.
Similar to moving your WhatsApp data from an Android to an iPhone, you need to be on the same reliable network. If you’re looking for one, you can consider calling Rise Broadband customer service to inquire about their internet plans–you won’t be disappointed.
Can You Transfer Your WhatsApp Data to Telegram?
Unlike WhatsApp, which has end-to-end encryption by default, Telegram does not offer the same form of security. Therefore, the majority of the security experts, usually advise against the use of Telegram.
That said, if this does not bother you and you want to keep using Telegram, and further want to transfer WhatsApp to Telegrams, this is indeed possible.
On both Android and iOS, you will have to open the specific chat you want to move to Telegram and then click on its name and details. Then, you’ll need to select Export Chat, and you’ll get the option where you want to share the chat–choose Telegram.
When you do so, you can either choose to just export chat messages or photos and videos as well.
How to Back Up Your WhatsApp Chats?
This is a rather common question asked by so many people using WhatsApp. You can back up your WhatsApp chats all on your iCloud. This will allow you to keep all your photos and messages safe if you’re moving from an iPhone to another iPhone, or from an Android to Android.
For example, if you break or upgrade your device, and replace it with the same ecosystem, you can always have your WhatsApp data back as it’ll be stored in the cloud. Up until September 2021, WhatsApp did not use it to encrypt end-to-end backups.
This created a security risk and further exposed people’s personal chats when requested by law enforcement. That said, WhatsApp now encrypts all backups, making it much safer to have chats backed up to Google’s Cloud or the iCloud.
To backup your WhatsApp chats on either of the two platforms, you will need an iCloud or Google Drive account. On iOS, you’ll need to go to WhatsApp Settings and start the backup by choosing Chat Backup, and then select Backup Now. Whereas, on an Android phone, choose the Move options on WhatsApp, and follow the same steps as done on an iPhone.
This way, you should be able to start the backup, and can choose whether you want to backup heavy data videos as well.
Final Thoughts
It’s not as common to want to switch from an iPhone to an Android phone, unlike vice versa. The iPhone is known to be more user-friendly and easy to use. However, there are instances where people will move to an Android device after using an iPhone.
